How resetting can help to stay true to our values, live with authenticity and accelerate professional growth and performance
How do we reset, stay true to our values and live and work with authenticity? Today's blog explores how cultivating a healthy personal leadership practice and working with a coach can be a fast track way to access unconscious thinking habits and behavioural patterns to accelerate professional growth and performance.
A definition of RESET is to: start again … so that you feel better able to deal with your life or with a situation.
What does that bring to mind for you? For me it raises the questions: What are the things I need to strive for and improve in order to attain my professional and personal aspirations and goals? What are the actions, thoughts and habits that I need to develop and nourish in order to maintain a healthy mind and body? What do I do, to come back to myself on a daily basis? What will I do to bring and find joy in the process?
Do these resonate?
Without asking ourselves questions about how to we regulate and encourage our personal and professional development, how do we grow in our leadership?
So what sort of practices do you do, or wish to develop?
Daily resetting practices might look like; going for a run or doing some stretches in the morning before the day starts, meditating, journaling or setting intentions, responding to prompts, boosting our morale with positive statements and reminding ourselves of the bigger goal as well as the smaller tasks.
With daily practice and regular check in we can start to understand our selves - our learning preferences, our values and strengths, where boundaries need to be established in work and life, and what drives and motivates us.
Without some kind of check-in and resetting our lives can become absorbed in external demands - other's opinions, the workplace's claim for our capacity, our boss, our families - and our attention is easily soaked up in social media scrolling, advertising and the loud speaker of commercialism claiming our focus and moulding our values and beliefs.
So how do you reset, stay true to your values and live and work with authenticity?
Cultivating a practice that quietens the outside world and allows for deep listening and introspection creates a space to become familiar with your internal world. Seeking to explore our inner landscape, befriend our internal characters - both the amiable and the less attractive parts - brings acceptance and understanding, and growth.
Using writing prompts can be a super effective way to access unconscious thoughts and beliefs and to bring feelings to the surface to see them in plain sight. Simply responding the the question 'how do you feel yesterday went?' as a paragraph of text that has a good chance of revealing hidden emotions.
The foundations of nutrition, sleep and exercise are essential components of for physical wellbeing, but so is our mental diet - eating a nutritious meal to fuel our body whilst poisoning our mind with toxic messages is self defeating.
And of course, coaching with an experienced coach who is skilled in both listening and questioning is a fast track way to access unconscious thinking habits and behavioural patterns to accelerate personal growth and professional performance.
The coaching space is a natural environment for resetting, where we explore the inner and outer landscape of the client's worlds and align or realign values and aspiration.
And for a DIY reset I've selected some key tools for reflection, introspection and creating a forward plan for a healthy and vibrant state of body and mind. Reset is based on 3 parts, REFLECT: What has been going on for you? REPLENISH: What do you wish to cultivate going forward? RESET: How will you make it work, what's the framework?
Each section has 3 tools to use and explore your internal and external landscapes, bring to light what is useful to your development and what is hindering it, and to create a clearer understanding of your needs and aspirations to work more efficiently and grow as a person.
It's an easily accessible way to check in and allow space for self care and nurture - for without these what do we become?
