On purpose and meaning, and finding a path back to our core.

“…we are all inherently creative, hopeful, kind, loving and compassionate souls, somewhat dinted or bent by the journey of existing, and that our process in life is to come back to our selves somehow. How we do or don’t do this is our own discovery and through our own choices….

...'What’s the meaning of life?' The girl asked her primary school teacher. The teacher rolled her eyes, looked down at the child, and said ‘Oh, Kate.’ And walked away.

So, why are we here?

Some of us instinctively have an answer to this question. Some of us don’t. Some of us haven’t even considered the question. Some won’t.

I don’t have the answer, but I have been investigating what it means via a visual art practice for the most part of my working life and exploring with others through coaching what life means to them.

It’s a natural enquiry, in coaching, to seek to find what motivates clients and approach with curiosity the way they go about daily existence. Some clients have bright northern stars in sight at all times and know exactly the path they are headed. Some have no clue. Both are fine. We start where we are.

What does life mean to me? I keep returning to the conundrum of how we exist as individual beams of light in the magnitude of systemic sociological, economic and environmental challenges we might find ourselves born into. At least, that’s what my visual art practice seeks to examine. If that sounds a bit gloomy, then you’ll be happy to hear that coaching, being solutions focussed and forwards facing - is the antithesis of these philosophical investigations - and is a proactive and delightful way to explore the positive potential.

The truth for me is this: that we are all inherently creative, hopeful, kind, loving and compassionate souls, somewhat dinted or bent by the journey of existing, and our process in life is to come back to our selves somehow. How we do or don’t do this is our own discovery and through our own choices.

Some of my clients have already returned on that path and are making a positive impact in many ways in their businesses - creative, environmental, imaginative, cultural - helping us bring ourselves back to the fundamental values that are needed on a global level to shift the tides back to sustainability, love and companionship. The work they do is truly inspirational. They share a passion to make positive change and their business goals reflect this. It’s not just passion. It’s essential, integral to ‘being’. It’s an existential requirement.

How do you exist and function within your worlds to feel a sense of fulfillment? What are your constraints? I’m curious to find out. If you’re curious too, then let’s explore it some more - you can simply send me a message.
