When the soul sits in the centre

I've been wanting to play with Maslow's hierarchy of needs for a long while, this week I had the opportunity to begin a work in progress...

I feel there will be many versions of this triangle and have the sense that there will be many other responses to Maslow’s famed hierarchy too - which to me stands as a relic from an historical and outdated management framework (and one that apparently was pinched from north American Indians, who’s triangle was inverted and had enlightenment as the first need..)

A session this week with a private client, ex GP and creative writer, saw our conversation reframing perspectives of 'success' and meaning in life and 'work'. Here is her triangle of needs.

When the question 'What's really important for you?' comes up in coaching it often brings with it unexpected insights which then shine a light to see how future plans might pan out differently.

What's important to most people, I've found, is not a big house and a fat car, but a sense of worth, of finding value, of connection, finding our place in the world and finding ourselves.

The activities that play out out our sense of purpose can be a source of enlightenment, fulfilment and inspiration and when they're placed at the heart of the triangle the perspective can change completely.

I couldn't help but put it down on paper.

There are so many lessons here for us all - what do you see in this?
