How coaching is the catalyst to heal the planet and the people, and why I coach

As a coach we continuously develop our skills and awareness, participating in CE’s (ICF credits that are necessary for our accreditation) as well as all sorts of trainings, webinars and reflective practice (which I find crucial and insightful).

This week one trainer asked our cohort of coaches - Why do you coach? And, Why is that important?

This is my response, and I feel it’s worth sharing:

>> I coach because the world is a broken place - yet there are Good People doing Great Things, and people aspiring to do Great Things. They want to make a positive impact in what they do and start to turn things around. I truly believe we can do that. I see coaching as a way to support people and planet  - to help them become the awesome leaders they need to be to make their impact. Coaching is the superpower in your back pocket. It’s insanely impactful. So let’s support the people doing the ‘Work’ and unleash their awesomeness. (This is what my ‘Zone of Brilliance™’ is all about - see below).

>> I coach because we as humans, are also broken. And listen - we are not going to heal the world unless we start to heal ourselves, too. I see so much work to do here, partly because we are bombarded with ‘the stuff of the world, of the internet, of the news, of consumerism and commercialism’ that throws us off our true pathway to brilliance. These things are crippling our potential as beautiful human beings. Because we have lost sight of what’s important. Our connection with each other and our home, and ourselves.

>> I coach because it gives me a wonderful sense of purpose and fulfils my need to inspire and connect with people, help them grow and realise their full potential. I literally fizzed with some unspeakable resonance on that first coach training call (later understood through somatics) because I felt like I had found ‘The Thing’ I was meant to do. My altruistic and optimistic personality could now be channelled with my gifts of creativity, curiosity and kindness - and some kick ass coaching skills - and be laser focussed to create a nourishing space for leaders to flourish. Wow, how cool is that.

>> I also coach to feel inspired, I happen to love an ideas generating session and thrive from energised discussion, blue sky thinking (with the addition of visual mapping and drawings of course) and bringing aspirations to life. I love the people I coach with, connecting with their lives and dreams, and I love the energy and joy I get when clients have aha! moments and realisations, insights and moments of BOOM!

A couple of foundational truths underpin my coaching:

I believe that we are each born kind, curious, creative and loving humans, and it’s our wonderful systems and man made ideals that have messed us up along the way. We can return to ourselves, our true nature and the nature of planet by enquiry and connection. Coaching helps with this because the journey of coaching is a journey of enquiry, and clients  get deeper insights about themselves and their behaviours, values and closer to what is truly important to them.

I also believe that everyone has the right to, and deserves to be, the best version they can be - that’s everyone, no matter where they were born or who they are. We owe ourselves permission to become our best and authentic self and nobody has the right to take that away.

And finally, I believe we’re all connected far more than we realise.

I hope that might fill anyone’s curiosity!

PS I created the Zone of Brilliance™ as a framework to support people to be their best and fulfil their positive impact in the world. It’s a combination of all the above - to find out more get in touch, I’d love to hear your perspective.

How does coaching work?

Coaching is brilliantly effective in helping you make shifts forwards, because it is forward facing and solutions focussed. This means there is pretty much always progress made, and often with clients, LOTS of progress is made in an astonishingly quick time.

As a coach I don’t advise you – but instead hold a belief that all answers are inside you - I ask you insightful, skilled questions to explore and uncover what’s really going on in your world and what are the things that prevent your progress. We use a range of coaching tools and techniques such as metaphor and neuroscience, NLP and somatics which can help to tease out sometimes unconscious beliefs or behaviours.

Great coaching can only happen in a safe space – I create a place of safety and non-judgement, which allows us to explore ideas and solutions openly, honestly and with trust and compassion.

Benefits of coaching:

Teach you new ways of thinking that can move you forward

Access tools and knowledge to make better informed choices

Help with decision making – getting an objective perspective

Find out what's holding you back

Gives you tools to tackle obstacles

A safe environment to bring issues to

Clarity and confidence on to move you forward
